Nasarawa Commissioner Unveils 2025 Agricultural Plan, Lauds Governor Sule’s Support

By Abel Zwànke, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Agriculture has outlined an ambitious agricultural plan for 2025, highlighting security, farmer support, and large-scale farming as key drivers of sector transformation.

During a press briefing on Tuesday in Lafia, the commissioner commended Governor Abdullahi Sule for creating a conducive environment for agriculture to thrive in the state.

“The governor has been pivotal in ensuring peace and security, which are crucial for agricultural productivity. His administration has not only prioritized security but also supported farmers with seedlings and training, equipping them with the tools needed for success,” the commissioner stated.

The commissioner also celebrated the success of the 10,000-hectare rice farm in Jangwa, Awe Local Government Area. Over 2,000 hectares were successfully harvested in 2024, marking a significant milestone. “The Jangwa rice farm demonstrates the agricultural potential of Nasarawa and the capability of our farmers when provided with the right support,” he added.

Looking ahead, the commissioner emphasized that 2025 would focus on active fieldwork and involvement from all stakeholders. “Agriculture in Nasarawa will shift from discussion to action. We need all farmers, stakeholders, and government officials to get actively involved,” he stated.

He urged all stakeholders, regardless of political or religious affiliation, to unite for the development of the Nasarawa Agricultural Plan. “This is not just about food production; it’s about job creation, food security, and strengthening our economy,” he emphasized.

The commissioner also appealed for peace in the state as the new year approached. “Without peace, there can be no progress. I urge everyone to remain peaceful and support our agricultural initiatives,” he said.

The commissioner commended Governor Sule for his vision and investments in agriculture, including capacity-building initiatives for farmers and the acquisition of modern farming equipment. “The governor’s commitment to agriculture is reflected in the strides we have made. His administration has laid a strong foundation for sustainable agriculture,” he remarked.

For 2025, the ministry plans to expand existing farms and explore new farming opportunities. “We aim to expand the Jangwa rice farm and replicate its success in other regions. Our goal is to ensure that no farmer is left behind,” he explained.

He assured farmers that the government would continue to offer subsidies and support for agricultural inputs. “We understand the challenges farmers face, and we are committed to alleviating their burdens. Subsidized fertilizers, access to credit facilities, and technical support will remain priorities,” he pledged.

The commissioner called on international partners and investors to tap into Nasarawa’s agricultural potential. “Nasarawa is open for business. We have fertile land, dedicated farmers, and a government eager to support investors. Let’s work together to make Nasarawa a model state for agriculture in Nigeria,” he stated.

He stressed the importance of innovation in agriculture, encouraging farmers to adopt new technologies and methods. “The world is evolving, and we must evolve with it. Precision farming, mechanization, and digital tools are the future, and Nasarawa is ready to lead the way,” he said.

The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering youth and women through agriculture. “Our programs are designed to ensure that women and young people are at the forefront of our agricultural revolution. Their involvement is critical to our success,” he noted.

With optimism for the future of agriculture in Nasarawa, the commissioner concluded, “With the right policies, commitment, and collaboration, Nasarawa will become a leading agricultural state in Nigeria. Together, we can make this vision a reality.”
