The Delta State Government has initiated the construction of an access road for the proposed Asaba Waterfront City, a landmark project in the state capital.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this during a project inspection on Tuesday, highlighting that the initiative was conceived by the previous administration through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The governor explained that the state government is responsible for constructing a six-lane access road to the new city, while developers will handle land reclamation and urban development.
“Asaba is becoming highly attractive to property developers, particularly those relocating from Lagos. Many people from the South-East find Asaba comfortable and hospitable,” the governor said.
He added: “The Asaba Waterfront City project is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. Our role is to reclaim the land and provide an access route—a six-lane road—while the developers handle the rest.
“They have completed about 20% of the work. However, a challenge remains with buildings obstructing the right of way. We have released funds for compensating affected property owners and for the project’s continuation.
“The contractors have assured us that the road project will be completed by July. I’ve reviewed the progress today, and I am pleased with their commitment. If this pace is maintained, the project will be finished by the end of the year.”
Governor Oborevwori also visited the 4.5 km Oko-Amakom to Oko-Obiakpu alignment road. He noted its significance to the local community, stating: “This road is vital for the people of Oko. Built one meter above the 2012 flood level, it served as refuge during the last flood.
“Due to the challenging terrain, the cost of this road is higher than constructing a 10 km road elsewhere. Nonetheless, it reflects our commitment to rural development and economic growth.”
Inspecting the Marine Road off Cable Point Road in Asaba, the governor emphasized its importance to local commerce, as goods frequently arrive from across the River Niger. He reaffirmed the government’s efforts to clean up Asaba, adding, “We want the best for our people, and I am confident this year will bring significant changes.”
Governor Oborevwori also reviewed construction progress on Leo Okonweze and Odozi-Obodo Streets, off Ezenei Avenue, urging contractors to expedite their work.
