Sokoto State Government Moves to Develop Climate Change Policy Document

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

The Sokoto State Government has commenced the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Policy Document to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development across the state.

This initiative was highlighted during a two-day validation session organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Environment.

Speaking at the session’s opening, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mustapha Alkali, underscored the importance of the climate change policy for the state’s future. “Today’s meeting is of critical importance as it directly impacts our society and environment,” Alkali said.

He emphasized that environmental sustainability is fundamental to societal survival and development, stating, “If you save your environment, you save your life. Without a conducive environment, there can be no governance, no peace, and no life.”

The validation session brought together stakeholders from government agencies, civil society organizations, and environmental experts to review and refine the draft policy document. The document outlines specific actions and strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change in Sokoto State.

Representing the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nura Shehu Tangaza, Alkali officially opened the session and called for collaborative efforts to combat climate change effectively.

Once finalized, the Climate Change Policy Document will serve as a strategic roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to environmental changes, and promote sustainability. It aims to provide measurable targets, guide decision-making processes, and enhance accountability, ensuring long-term resilience to climate challenges in the state.
