NLIST Upgrades Sokoto Office to Regional Centre, Governor Aliyu Pledges Support

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

Governor Ahmed Aliyu has pledged his administration’s full support for the Nigeria Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NLIST) as it upgrades its Sokoto office to a regional centre.

Governor Aliyu made the commitment during a courtesy visit by NLIST Director-General, Dr. Awwal Mustafa Imam, commending the decision to elevate the office. He noted that the move would significantly boost the region’s economic development, aligning with his administration’s nine-point Smart Innovative Agenda.

“The activities of this institute are in line with our agenda to reduce unemployment and create job opportunities. Upgrading the Sokoto office to a regional centre is a strategic step, especially considering Sokoto’s prominence in leather production,” the governor remarked.

He highlighted Sokoto’s legacy in leatherwork, stating, “Even the popular Moroccan leather has roots in Sokoto, crafted from our renowned Sokoto red goats.”

Governor Aliyu assured Dr. Imam of his administration’s readiness to provide the necessary support for the centre to operate effectively. He also appealed for more job opportunities for Sokoto indigenes within the regional office, expressing optimism about enhanced collaboration between the state and NLIST.

“We look forward to stronger ties with NLIST to benefit our people,” Aliyu added.

Dr. Imam explained that the decision to upgrade the Sokoto office was driven by the state’s strategic importance in the leather industry. He revealed plans to equip the new regional centre with modern facilities, including the relocation of heavy equipment from Zaria and the construction of an affluent water treatment plant.

The Director-General emphasized the need for state governments to support the leather industry by sponsoring students for leather-related courses at the institute. He also urged members of the National Assembly to include the centre in their constituency projects to promote skill acquisition in the region.

“The leather industry has the potential to significantly contribute to Nigeria’s economy if adequately supported by state governments,” Dr. Imam stated.

Dr. Imam praised Nasiru Shehu Bodinga, a federal lawmaker, for his efforts in facilitating the upgrade of the Sokoto office. He also announced Garba Ajiya Kilgori, a Sokoto indigene, as the pioneer Coordinator of the regional centre.

The initiative is expected to enhance Sokoto’s position as a hub for leather production and contribute to national economic growth through skill acquisition and job creation.
