The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has expressed deep devastation over the passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, describing him as a revered nationalist, elder statesman, and leader of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF).
In a statement on Tuesday, the forum declared that Chief Clark’s death marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s fight for equity, justice, and true federalism.
A Lifetime of Advocacy for Justice and Equity
According to Luka Binniyat, spokesman for the MBF, the forum’s president, Dr. Bitrus Pogu, emphasized Chief Clark’s unwavering commitment to the Middle Belt region and national unity.
“Chief Edwin Clark was deeply invested in the welfare of the Middle Belt. He stood by us in our most challenging times and made several interventions to champion our cause,” Dr. Pogu stated.
He described the late statesman as a tireless advocate for justice, peace, and the protection of marginalized ethnic groups, stressing that his commitment to fairness and national unity was unparalleled.
A Great Void in the Fight for True Federalism
Dr. Pogu lamented that Chief Clark’s passing is even more painful following the recent demise of Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who served as Deputy Leader of the SMBLF.
“Their near-simultaneous departures leave a great void in the collective struggle for justice and equity in Nigeria,” he said.
He noted that Chief Clark’s influence extended beyond the South-South region, as he fought alongside other regional leaders to uphold the rights of Nigerians, particularly in the Middle Belt and Southern regions.
“The loss of these two distinguished nonagenarians is not only a profound blow to their respective regions but also to the entire nation. Their leadership, wisdom, and relentless pursuit of fairness will be sorely missed,” Pogu added.
A Final Tribute
As the Middle Belt mourns the loss of an irreplaceable leader, Dr. Pogu prayed for eternal rest for Chief Clark.
“May the Almighty Creator welcome Pa Edwin Clark with open arms. May his legacy continue to inspire the fight for a just and equitable Nigeria.”
The nation, he said, must now uphold and continue the values of justice, fairness, and national unity that Chief Clark fought for throughout his life.
