Sokoto Government Warns Residents as Meningitis Cases Rise

By Abigail Philip David

The Sokoto State government has alerted residents to a rising number of suspected meningitis cases in several local government areas.

In a statement on Tuesday, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Faruk Wurno, through the Ministry of Health’s Public Relations Officer, Nura Maikwanci, confirmed that laboratory tests had identified multiple cases of the disease.

“To contain its spread, the Ministry has intensified surveillance, case management, and public health interventions,” the statement read.

Residents have been urged to take preventive measures, including seeking immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, or neck stiffness. The government also emphasized the importance of personal and environmental hygiene, avoiding overcrowding, and ensuring proper ventilation in homes and public spaces.

The commissioner encouraged residents to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility. He also assured the public that Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto had provided essential medications to health centres across the state to ensure prompt treatment.
