Bayelsa Kicks Off Canal Cleanup to Tackle Flooding

Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

The Bayelsa State Government has initiated a large-scale operation to clear and desilt canals and creeks across Yenagoa and surrounding areas to tackle persistent flooding.

Addressing newsmen, Surv. Wilson Omuso, Director-General of the Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control, said, ” Our approach is driven by geospatial studies highlighting the vital role of downstream canals in flood control.”

He noted that the project, which kicked off at Goodnews Street and Agbura’s second bridge, focuses on three primary downstream canals that direct floodwater from smaller channels into creeks and the sea, with equipment already mobilized to various sites.

Omuso stressed that deeper waterways, like Epie Creek, require specialized machinery, which the government is working to acquire.

He emphasized the state’s dedication to clearing all canals to protect communities from flood risks.

Also speaking, Mr. Daniel Tenemeni, the Directorate’s Secretary, appealed to residents to stop dumping refuse in water channels, warning that such practices cause blockages and worsen flooding.

Mr. Godwin Igiri, a landlord in Goodnews Street, praised Governor Douye Diri’s administration, noting that regular desilting has significantly curbed flooding in the area.
