Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

The Chairman of Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association and board member of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Ama-Ebi Ebikpolade Stow, has expressed admiration for the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, describing it as “colourful and intense,” showcasing the preparedness of all participating states.

Ama-Ebi commended the organizers for providing standard facilities and equipment for table tennis, noting that the floor and tables were top-notch. He stated, “The equipment is very necessary for the game of table tennis, and I can see that they are center full 25, which is standard.”

The Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association Chairman highlighted the challenges facing table tennis development in Nigeria, bemoaning the need for support from the federal government and private sector involvement. “There’s a lot that needs to be done,” he emphasized. “We need support from the federal government and also we need to attract the private sector to come in and give us a helping hand.”

Ama-Ebi emphasized that table tennis is guided by rules, allowing young athletes to compete alongside experienced players. “If there is a rule that says elite players should not be involved, fine,” he said. “But there are no rules like that. And provided you are a Nigerian, you have the right to play.”

He expressed confidence in Bayelsa State’s table tennis athletes, stating, “The chances are there. We are going to do well. All I can say of my athletes, they are top there with the best.”

Furthermore, Ama-Ebi noted that the Gateway Games 2024 has provided a platform for athletes to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience.

He added that the competition would help to identify talented athletes who could represent Nigeria in future international competitions.

He also praised the athletes for their dedication and hard work, saying, “Our athletes have shown great commitment and determination, and I believe they will make us proud in the years to come.”
