Why Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha Was Buried Within 24 Hours — Family Explains

New details have surfaced explaining the reason behind the swift burial of Nigerian highlife legend, Mike Ejeagha, just a day after his passing.

The iconic musician, known for his timeless folk hit “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo”, died on the night of Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95. He was laid to rest the following day, Saturday, June 7, in his hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the late singer’s eldest son, Emmanuel Ejeagha, revealed that the quick burial was in fulfillment of the musician’s final wish.

“My father made it very clear before he died that he did not want to be embalmed,” Emmanuel said. “He specifically instructed me, as his first son, to ensure that he was buried within 24 hours of his death. We have simply honored that wish.”

Emmanuel explained that the decision was made after consulting with extended family members and local community leaders. He added that Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State was also informed and gave his full support.

“I called a family meeting and also summoned my kindred. We discussed the matter thoroughly. Everyone, including the governor, agreed that his wishes should be respected,” he said.

He further emphasized the cultural importance of honoring the wishes of elders, noting, “There can be serious consequences when the final requests of an elder are ignored.”

The family also announced that a formal funeral ceremony and celebration of life will be held at a later date to allow fans, friends, and admirers to pay their respects to the legendary musician.

Mike Ejeagha, revered for his rich storytelling and the use of Igbo proverbs in music, leaves behind a lasting legacy that has deeply influenced traditional highlife and preserved the cultural heritage of the Igbo people.
