June 12: SDP Honours MKO Abiola’s Legacy, Hails His Sacrifice for Democracy

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has paid glowing tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola, recognizing his pivotal role and ultimate sacrifice in the fight for democracy in Nigeria.

In a statement released in Abuja, the Chairman of the Lagos State SDP and Chairman of SDP Chairmen Nationwide, Hon. Femi Olaniyi, described Abiola as a true patriot, statesman, and visionary who embodied the principles of justice, inclusivity, and national unity.

“MKO Abiola was more than a political leader—he was a builder of people, institutions, and ideas,” Olaniyi said. “His legacy is woven into the foundation of the SDP and the democratic fabric of our nation.”

Abiola, who won the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election under the SDP platform, is widely regarded as a martyr for Nigeria’s democracy. Olaniyi praised his unwavering commitment to national development, youth empowerment, and inclusive governance.

“He believed in a Nigeria that worked for everyone. His philanthropy and vision continue to inspire generations of Nigerians,” he added.

Olaniyi called on SDP members across the 36 states and the FCT to draw inspiration from Abiola’s leadership style and uphold the values he championed—democracy, unity, and progress.

He urged party members to remain focused on the goal of building a better Nigeria for all, especially as the nation commemorates Democracy Day on June 12.

“Let this day remind us of MKO Abiola’s resilience, courage, and ultimate sacrifice. His spirit should guide our efforts to unite the country and deliver real change through democratic ideals,” Olaniyi concluded.
