NYSC DG Nafiu Assures Corps Members of Safety Nationwide

By Anne Azuka

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olukunle Oluseye Nafiu, has assured Corps members across Nigeria of their safety throughout their service year.

Speaking during his visit to the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Orientation Course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, Aniocha North Local Government Area, Delta State, Brig. Gen. Nafiu reiterated the NYSC’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and security of Corps members nationwide.

According to him, “NYSC is always conscious of the safety of Corps members across the country. It is our policy never to deploy them into harm’s way.”

He explained that before deployment, thorough background checks are conducted in collaboration with security agencies including the police, Civil Defence, Department of State Services (DSS), the military, and local community leaders. “We engage with key leaders within the communities to ensure Corps members are safe. We also receive periodic updates from security operatives on the safety situation in deployment areas,” he added.

He further noted that the scheme regularly reviews deployments and withdraws Corps members from any area where threats are identified. “Anywhere you see Corps members deployed means the area is stable and secure,” he affirmed.

Calls for Financial Discipline, Skill Acquisition

Brig. Gen. Nafiu appreciated the media for their continued reportage on NYSC activities and urged Corps members to embrace vocational training during camp to enhance their post-service opportunities.

“I don’t want you to join the unemployment queue. Be diligent and take your camp training seriously. We have partners ready to empower you with starter kits, grants, and other forms of support,” he said.

He advised Corps members to cultivate a savings habit from their monthly allowance of ₦77,000, suggesting they save at least 30% for future investment. “Some Corps members who earned ₦33,000 still managed to save. You can too,” he said.

He reminded them of the NYSC’s purpose, stating: “This is a national and mandatory scheme for all Nigerian graduates. The service year is a clarion call to serve the nation selflessly—under the sun or in the rain.”

Brig. Gen. Nafiu encouraged Corps members to stay committed, serve the country with dedication, and avoid the temptation to abandon their service year. “Don’t japa—stay, complete your service, and contribute to nation-building,” he urged.

He emphasized the importance of multiple income streams, noting that the in-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme was designed to equip them with practical skills for self-reliance and leadership.
