The Kogi State Ministry of Education has launched the 2025/2026 Annual School Census (ASC) on the Federal Government’s Digital Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS) portal.

At a stakeholders’ sensitisation meeting held at the Government House in Lokoja on Monday, education stakeholders pledged their support for the exercise ahead of its commencement on June 24.

The Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, said the census would provide critical statistical data for education planning, policy formulation and resource allocation.

According to him, every school in the state will receive a unique 10-digit identification number under the DNEMIS platform, while each learner will be assigned a Learner Identification Number (LIN) linked to WAEC and NECO records.

Jones commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for prioritising education through a budgetary allocation of 30 per cent to the sector.

He stressed the importance of accurate data collection, warning that failure by schools to upload relevant information could lead to under-reporting and affect planning and funding for the state’s education system.

The commissioner also noted that every learner must possess a LIN to benefit from government educational support programmes and incentives.

In her goodwill message, a former Commissioner for Education, Dr. Rosemary Osikoya, emphasised the need for proper structures and reliable data management within the education sector.

She observed that some private schools often fail to provide complete information due to concerns about taxation, while several educational institutions and skills acquisition centres do not maintain adequate records despite existing laws on data management.

“If we truly want increased investment in education, it must be supported by credible data. Accurate education statistics make effective planning possible,” she said.

Representatives of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) commended the ministry for involving private schools in policy decisions affecting the sector.

Director of Educational Planning, Research and Statistics (PRS), Dr. Animoku Ahman Elizabeth, said the Annual School Census remains a valuable tool for educational development but continues to face challenges, including incomplete data, fears of taxation and low stakeholder participation.

She clarified that the census is designed strictly for planning, research and policy development, and not for taxation purposes.

According to her, awareness campaigns will be intensified to educate school owners and administrators on the benefits of accurate data collection in improving educational outcomes and resource distribution.

She disclosed that the ministry would commence training for school data officers, beginning with Lokoja Local Government Area before extending advocacy activities to other zones.

The Western Zone advocacy meeting is scheduled for June 19 in Kabba, while Kogi Central and Kogi East meetings will hold on June 22 in Okene and June 23 in Anyigba, respectively.

The 2025/2026 Annual School Census is expected to commence officially on June 24.

The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by representatives of education agencies, former commissioners, non-governmental organisations, media practitioners, religious leaders and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has urged Christian leaders to defend truth, speak to political authorities when necessary and promote peace and moral values amid the social, economic and security challenges facing the country. Kefas made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while addressing participants at the Ministers’ Conference organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.

The conference, themed “The Church and the State: Partners in God’s Plan in a Changing World,” brought together Christian ministers and leaders to discuss the role of the Church in nation-building, peacebuilding and good governance. The governor said government and the Church have distinct constitutional and spiritual responsibilities but could collaborate in areas that promote peace, development and social stability.

He urged Christian leaders to uphold truth, compassion, justice and moral discipline while advising political authorities without allowing partisan interests to compromise the Church’s independence. “The Church must not become an extension of any political party,” Kefas said, urging ministers to provide constructive guidance and resist divisions based on politics, ethnicity or personal interests.

Kefas also called on religious leaders to use their platforms to discourage corruption, drug abuse, violence, hatred and injustice, while encouraging young people to pursue legitimate opportunities. He assured residents that his administration would continue to promote fairness, justice and peaceful coexistence while protecting citizens’ rights and freedom of worship.

The governor also expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with religious institutions in education, peacebuilding, community development and efforts to address drug abuse. He appealed to citizens and religious leaders to embrace unity and forgiveness, saying the development of Taraba required collective responsibility.
