FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late President Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday at the age of 82.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Tinubu. The declaration is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by the President in recognition of Buhari’s contributions to the nation.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a leader who served the nation with unwavering dedication and integrity.

“The public holiday is a gesture of respect for the late President’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s unity, democracy, and development,” the statement read.

“This day offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on his legacy and the values he championed throughout his public service.”

Buhari passed away in London after a prolonged illness. His death was confirmed in a statement issued by his former special adviser, Garba Shehu, on Sunday evening.

The Interior Minister urged Nigerians to use the day to honour Buhari’s memory by embracing peace, unity, and patriotism—principles he consistently stood for.

“As part of the national mourning, flags are to be flown at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, for seven days,” Tunji-Ojo noted.

He extended the government’s condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of the former leader’s soul.
