NYSC Is the Thread Binding Nigeria’s Diversity” — Gov. Diri

By Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has hailed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a cornerstone of national identity, emphasizing its critical role in fostering unity and shared values among Nigeria’s diverse population.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 Batch B, Stream 1 corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Boro Town, Governor Diri—represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Alfred Kemepado Nimizigha—urged the corps members to embrace the legacy of the scheme and contribute meaningfully to its objectives.

“As you begin your journey in this distinguished programme, I encourage you to seize the privilege of shaping this legacy and making it your own,” Diri said.

He invited the corps members to explore legitimate opportunities in Bayelsa State, highlighting the state’s hospitality and vast prospects.

“Your time here is not just about service; it is about personal growth and seizing opportunities,” he added.

The governor emphasized the importance of discipline, urging corps members to adhere strictly to camp rules to ensure a productive and enjoyable experience.

He advised them to remain focused on meaningful pursuits and to avoid distractions that could derail their future aspirations. “Stay calm, stay focused, and success will come in due course,” he said.

Governor Diri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving facilities at the orientation camp and ensuring the safety and security of corps members throughout their service year.

“Wherever you are posted, we have taken adequate measures to ensure your peace and security,” he assured.

He also commended the NYSC leadership and staff for their dedication to instilling values of integrity, patriotism, and service—qualities he described as vital to fostering national unity and pride.

The governor concluded by wishing the corps members success, good health, and prosperity, assuring them that their NYSC experience would shape their character and provide lifelong lessons.

In her welcome address, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli Charity, outlined the objectives of the orientation course and urged corps members to approach their service year with seriousness and commitment.

She cautioned against social vices and actions that could tarnish the reputation of the scheme, both during the orientation period and at their places of primary assignment.

Mrs. Okpalifo expressed gratitude to Governor Diri for his continued support for the NYSC in Bayelsa State, noting that his contributions have been instrumental to the scheme’s success in the state.
