SWAN President, Others Arrive Asaba for 9th National Youth Games Kick-Off

By Anne Azuka

The President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, on Thursday arrived in Asaba, the Delta State capital, for the 9th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), scheduled to kick off on Friday, August 29, 2025.

According to a statement by SWAN Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, other members of the SWAN National Executive Committee (NEC), state chapter chairmen and secretaries, as well as several sports journalists from across Nigeria, are also in Asaba for the Games, which will run from August 29 to September 6, 2025.

On arrival, Benjamin toured athletes’ and officials’ camps, as well as competition and screening venues, where he noted that activities were gradually picking up as contingents from various states settled in.

Speaking to journalists, the SWAN President expressed optimism that this year’s edition would produce future stars who would make their states and the country proud.

“The competition, designed for U-15 athletes, is expected to discover talents for the future. The stage is set, and we expect nothing but an excellent outing for all participants,” Benjamin said.

He also charged sports journalists to remain professional in their coverage of the Games.

“I expect my colleagues to be on top of their duties. I urge every sports journalist to verify information and sources before publishing. Accreditation for coverage of the Games will be strictly for duly registered SWAN members,” he added.

Delta State, the defending champion and serial winner of the competition, will be aiming to retain its title.
