Tinubu Declares 9th National Youth Games Open in Delta

The 9th National Youth Games kicked off on Friday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declaring the event open.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications and former Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, the President described the Games as a vital platform for discovering and nurturing talents that have gone on to represent Nigeria at continental and international levels.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, noting that sports remain a unifying force for the country. He also commended the National Sports Commission, led by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their efforts in promoting youth and grassroots sports.

Tinubu praised the Delta State Government for consistently hosting the Games, stressing that Asaba has become the hub of sports competitions in Nigeria. He wished the athletes success, praying that the best teams and individuals would shine.

Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, described the event as a celebration of youth, unity, and Nigeria’s future. He highlighted the state’s record of producing sports icons such as Stephen Keshi, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Blessing Okagbare, and Ese Brume, and reaffirmed Delta’s commitment to grassroots development through investments in facilities and competitions.

Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, said the Games are central to building a pathway from grassroots talent to elite performance. Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Onoriode Oborevwori, assured participants of world-class facilities and a memorable hosting experience.

Established in 2013, the National Youth Games serve as a platform for talent discovery and unity. This year’s edition, the third in a row to be hosted in Delta, has drawn over 6,000 athletes competing in 37 sports. Delta, the defending champion, has won all eight previous editions.
