Alleged Blasphemy: Woman Lynched, Burnt to Death in Niger Community

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

A restaurant operator identified as Amaye has been lynched and set ablaze in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.

According to Daily Trust, the incident occurred on Saturday after Amaye allegedly made comments considered offensive while interacting with a customer at her restaurant. Reports said the customer had jokingly expressed interest in marrying her, referencing the tradition of the Prophet, to which she reportedly responded in a manner deemed blasphemous.

Eyewitnesses noted that she was first taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba, who handed her over to security operatives for investigation. However, before the process could continue, a mob overpowered the security agents, lynched the woman, and set her body ablaze.

The Chairman of Mariga LGA, Abbas Adamu Kasuwan-Garba, confirmed the incident, adding that normalcy had since been restored in the area.

The Niger State Police Command also confirmed the killing. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said:

“On 30/8/2025 at about 2pm, a report indicated that one Amaye, a female of Kasuwan-Garba, Mariga LGA, made some comments against the Islamic Prophet. Unfortunately, it led to a mob attack and she was set ablaze before the reinforcement of security teams. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure arrests are effected, investigated, and prosecuted.”

The killing draws parallels with a similar incident in Kano State, where a Christian woman was mobbed and killed over alleged blasphemy.
