How Gumel in Jigawa Celebrates Eid-ul-Maulud with Sallar Gani

While Muslims across Nigeria mark Eid-ul-Maulud with prayers, sermons, and community gatherings, the people of Gumel in Jigawa State add a unique cultural twist known as Sallar Gani.

Sallar Gani is a centuries-old tradition that combines religion, culture, and royal pageantry, turning the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday celebration into a grand communal festival.

At the heart of the event are colorful horse displays, where horsemen adorned in vibrant regalia ride in coordinated formations to the delight of spectators. The occasion also brings together district heads, traditional leaders, and the Gumel Emirate Council, who join the people in a show of unity and heritage.

For the people of Gumel, Sallar Gani is more than entertainment. It is a symbol of identity and continuity, a celebration that reinforces loyalty to the emirate, pride in tradition, and devotion to faith. Families, visitors, and dignitaries gather in large numbers, turning the town into a hub of cultural and spiritual expression.

Through Sallar Gani, Gumel demonstrates how religious observances like Eid-ul-Maulud can be enriched with cultural practices, preserving history while strengthening community bonds.
