8th Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup Kicks Off September 18

By Anne Azuka

The 8th edition of the Zenith Bank/Delta Principals’ Cup football competition will kick off on September 18 in Asaba, with organisers promising a bigger and more exciting showcase of young talent.

At the official unveiling, Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, described the competition as “more than just football,” stressing its role in youth empowerment, discipline, teamwork, and character building.

“This tournament reflects our commitment to education beyond the classroom,” Ezewu said. “We are raising well-rounded individuals with skills that prepare them for the future.”

She praised Zenith Bank Plc for sponsoring the competition for eight consecutive years, calling their support “a beacon of hope.” Ezewu highlighted success stories of past participants now playing abroad, including Ekemini Imen in Denmark, Okiki Vwegba and Okiki Oruese in Russia, and others thriving at Morak Football Academy in Warri.

Zenith Bank’s representative, Dr. Ifeanyi Ataman, reaffirmed the bank’s long-term support for grassroots sports. “Our sponsorship is a strategic investment in community development and nurturing tomorrow’s leaders,” he said.

Mr. Tony Pemu, Chief Responsibility Officer of Hideaplus Nigeria Ltd, traced the tournament’s growth since its launch in 2017, noting that it has become one of Delta’s most anticipated grassroots sporting events.

He announced that this year’s edition will run until October 16, with upgraded officiating, discipline, and professionalism. “The aim is not just to play football but to discover and nurture hidden talents who can compete internationally,” Pemu said.

Past winners include Master Care International School, Asaba (2017), Marvel International School, Ughelli (2018), Obule Integrated School, Sapele (2019), College of Commerce, Warri (2020 and 2021), Umuaja Mixed Secondary School, Ukwuani (2022), Umutu Grammar School, Ukwuani (2023), and Ogbromo Secondary School, Uvwie (2024).

Organisers assured that the Local Organising Committee is fully prepared, with strong backing from the Delta State Government, Zenith Bank, and schools across the state. Wide media coverage is also planned to boost visibility.

Over 1,000 schools have participated since inception, with this year’s edition expected to further cement the Principals’ Cup as a launchpad for future stars.
