Lookman Rediscovers Scoring Form Ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup Playoff

Ademola Lookman finally ended his goal drought on Tuesday night, finding the net in Atalanta’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan in Bergamo — a timely return to form for both club and country.

The Nigerian forward’s strike not only rescued a point for La Dea but also marked a personal breakthrough after a challenging start to the season. Lookman had gone without a goal since May, when he last scored against AS Roma, enduring months of frustration amid uncertainty over his future during the summer transfer window.

After a stellar 2023/24 campaign in which he netted a career-best 15 Serie A goals, Lookman had pushed for a move away — a saga that temporarily strained his relationship with Atalanta. But his well-taken equaliser against Milan, a sharp left-footed finish from Mario Pašalić’s assist, was a reminder of his class and composure in front of goal.

Milan had earlier taken the lead through Samuele Ricci’s deflected effort, but Lookman’s response restored belief and ensured Atalanta extended their unbeaten Serie A run to nine matches (W2, D7).

For Nigeria, Lookman’s return to scoring form comes at the perfect moment ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff clash with Gabon in Morocco. With Victor Osimhen in blistering form and Lookman regaining confidence, the Super Eagles’ attack looks increasingly formidable.

While Atalanta manager Ivan Jurić will be frustrated by yet another draw — the team’s fifth in succession — he will be encouraged to see one of his key forwards rediscover his spark.

For Lookman, Tuesday’s goal could mark the start of a long-awaited resurgence in a season that began under uncertainty but now shows signs of promise.
