Delta Lawmakers Endorse Tinubu, Oborevwori as Sole Candidates for 2027 Elections

By Anne Azuka

Serving and former members of the Delta State House of Assembly have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as their sole candidates for the 2027 presidential and governorship elections. The adoption took place on Thursday during an extraordinary session in Asaba, held as part of the maiden edition of the Delta State House of Assembly Speaker’s Annual Leadership Series.

The special session, presided over by the Speaker of the 8th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, brought together legislators from the 1st to the 8th Assemblies. The lawmakers also passed a vote of implicit confidence in President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori, citing their contributions to good governance and development.

The motion for their adoption was moved by Rt. Hon. Halims Agoda, a member of the 1st Assembly and former federal lawmaker. It was seconded by Hon. Kris Njokwuemeni, a member of the 2nd Assembly and former Majority Leader, before being unanimously adopted by the Non-Sitting Members.

Speaking at the event themed “Leadership Dynamics in the Delta State House of Assembly: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” Speaker Guwor described the gathering as a historic convergence of legislative experience. He emphasized the importance of building consensus within a diverse political environment to drive inclusive governance.

He noted that every Assembly since 1992 had contributed to shaping Delta State’s democratic evolution. “Today, we are connecting the past with the present and laying stronger foundations for the future of legislative governance in our dear state,” Guwor said.

Guwor highlighted the presence of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori—himself a former Speaker and presiding officer of the 6th and 7th Assemblies—describing the reunion as an opportunity for reflection, mentorship, and the preservation of institutional memory.

He stressed that knowledge transfer from former lawmakers is essential to strengthening the resilience and dignity of the Assembly. “The legislature must be seen as a partner in governance—firm in oversight, fair in judgment, and focused on results that improve lives,” he added.

Several non-sitting members, including Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Frank Enekorogha, Emmanuel Okoro, Basil Ganagana, Ovie Agas, Funkekeme Solomon, Orezi Esievo, Anthony Elekeokwuri, and Johnson Erijo, praised the Speaker for initiating the leadership series. They said such engagements would deepen unity, promote peace, and enhance development across the state.

Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, who chaired the planning committee, described the gathering as the first of its kind in Nigeria. He thanked participants for their attendance and expressed optimism that the lessons shared would have lasting impact.

A communiqué from the session was still being awaited at the time of filing this report.
