FG to Partner with Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria on Local Drug Production

By Francis Wilfred

The Federal Government has announced its readiness to collaborate with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) to boost local production of pharmaceutical products and improve access to affordable healthcare across the country. The commitment aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for enhanced healthcare delivery.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Mohammed Danjuma Sanusi, gave the assurance when a delegation from the PSN, led by its National President, Pharmacist Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the SGF reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the well-being of Nigerians through accessible and affordable healthcare services. He noted that supporting the local production of essential medicines is a critical step toward strengthening the health sector.

Sanusi added that adequate funding would play a significant role in achieving these goals and assured the PSN of the government’s willingness to provide necessary support and create an enabling environment for the Society to attract partnerships and donor funding.

Speaking during the visit, PSN President, Pharmacist Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, said the purpose of the engagement was to brief the SGF on activities ahead of the Society’s centenary celebration scheduled for March 27, 2027.

He explained that the centenary events will include public enlightenment campaigns, health outreaches, public lectures, and strategic engagements with government and policymakers. These activities, he said, are designed to promote Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) and ensure safer, more efficient healthcare services for Nigerians.

Ibrahim also disclosed that the Society plans to launch a N5 billion Endowment Fund dedicated to advancing pharmacy education and research. The initiative aims to strengthen pharmaceutical development and expand innovation within Nigeria’s drug manufacturing ecosystem.
