The Kogi State Government has warned Nigerians to avoid worship centres without adequate security following a fresh insecurity incident in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area, where gunmen attacked a church and abducted a pastor, his wife, and several worshippers. The warning was issued on Monday in Lokoja by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo.Fanwo said the rising wave of insecurity across the country requires heightened caution and personal responsibility from citizens. He noted that criminals deliberately target locations with weak or no security presence, making some religious centres particularly vulnerable.“This is not the right time to gather in places without security. Avoid unsecured churches and mosques for now. Your life is more important than any routine. Security is everyone’s concern,” he said.
According to the commissioner, recent attacks show that armed groups often survey communities for days before striking. He urged worshippers—especially those in rural or border communities—to adopt a more cautious approach when selecting places of worship.Fanwo also advised Nigerians to limit unnecessary travel, particularly through areas recently identified as high-risk.“Some journeys are not worth the risk. Reduce movement, keep your plans private, and be vigilant,” he warned. He disclosed that the state government has intensified joint operations with security agencies to rescue the abducted victims and dismantle criminal hideouts. Enhanced patrols, increased surveillance, and stronger community policing structures are among the measures currently underway. The commissioner emphasized the importance of community intelligence, cautioning residents against ignoring unusual movement or suspicious individuals.“
When people refuse to speak up, they empower the attackers. If you see something, say something. That simple act can prevent tragedy,” he said. Fanwo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring safety across Kogi State and called for sustained collaboration between citizens and security forces. He noted that improved intelligence-sharing remains essential to curbing further attacks. The Kogi State Government urged the public to prioritise personal safety while authorities continue efforts to strengthen security across vulnerable communities.
