Eight students of the University of Jos (Unijos) tragically died in a road accident in Jos, Plateau State, on Thursday, December 11, 2025.According to reports, the students were returning from a campus event when the crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. opposite Unity Bank, Zaria Road, Jos.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Plateau Command confirmed the incident. SRC Peter Longsan, Public Education Officer of the command, stated that the crash involved a bus carrying eleven students and a trailer. Seven victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while an eighth succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Three other students are currently receiving medical treatment. All victims were male.Longsan added that eyewitness accounts indicate the bus was traveling at high speed and attempted a wrongful overtaking maneuver, which caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the collision.
The FRSC Plateau Sector Commander, Olajide Mogaji, called on motorists to exercise caution on the roads, especially at night. He urged drivers to avoid excessive speed, dangerous driving, driving under the influence, and operating vehicles while fatigued or unwell, citing these factors as leading causes of fatal road accidents.The FRSC confirmed that a detailed investigation into the crash is ongoing to determine the full circumstances and prevent future incidents.This tragic accident has left the University of Jos community mourning the loss of promising students and young leaders, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to road safety regulations across the state.
