Deji Adenyanju Commends Tinubu on Oyedepo’s Appointment as Director of Public Prosecutions

By Israel Adamu, Jos

Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adenyanju, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), describing the decision as a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s justice system. In a statement issued on Thursday, Adenyanju said the appointment reflects a positive commitment to the rule of law and signals renewed efforts to reform the country’s prosecution framework. He noted that the role of the Director of Public Prosecutions is central to the credibility and effectiveness of the justice sector.Adenyanju praised Oyedepo’s professional track record, highlighting what he described as the senior advocate’s demonstrated independence of mind and adherence to due process. According to him, these qualities are critical for an office responsible for overseeing criminal prosecutions on behalf of the state.

He stated that by entrusting such a sensitive and influential position to a seasoned legal practitioner, President Tinubu has shown that justice sector reform can be driven by competence, integrity, and respect for the rule of law rather than political considerations.“By entrusting such a sensitive office to a seasoned professional, the President has shown that reform of the justice sector can be driven by capacity and respect for due process,” Adenyanju said. The activist further argued that the appointment of Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions could help rebuild public confidence in Nigeria’s prosecution system, which has often faced criticism over delays, selective prosecutions, and perceived political interference.

According to Adenyanju, a credible and independent DPP is essential for ensuring fairness in the administration of justice and for restoring trust in the legal process. He said the decision sends an important message about professionalism and accountability in key public institutions.“It is a step in the right direction and one that, if sustained, can help restore faith in public prosecutions as a tool for justice,” he added.

Adenyanju also urged the federal government to ensure that merit-based appointments remain the guiding principle across the justice sector and other critical areas of governance. He emphasized that consistent adherence to professionalism would strengthen institutions and promote the rule of law nationwide. He concluded that the appointment of Rotimi Oyedepo as Director of Public Prosecutions deserves commendation, expressing hope that the new DPP will be given the independence and institutional support required to carry out his duties effectively. The appointment comes amid ongoing discussions on justice sector reforms under the Tinubu administration, with legal stakeholders calling for stronger institutions, transparency, and accountability in criminal prosecutions.
