Kogi First Lady Empowers Over 500 Persons With Disabilities With Cash Grants, Mobility Aids

The Kogi State First Lady, Hajia Sefinat Usman Ododo, has launched an empowerment programme that provided cash grants and mobility aids to more than 500 persons with disabilities (PWDs) and women in the state.The initiative, tagged Moving Forward Together, was organised by the Ohunene Empowerment Initiative, founded by the First Lady, and held at Muhammadu Buhari Square in Lokoja. It aims to promote economic inclusion and improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups.

Speaking at the event, Hajia Ododo said the programme reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that no group is excluded from development. She acknowledged the support of the Kogi State Government and the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.According to her, 260 women received ₦100,000 each, while 100 persons with disabilities were given ₦200,000 each to support small businesses. An additional 260 persons with disabilities received ₦50,000 each, alongside mobility aids including wheelchairs, crutches, walking sticks, and guide canes.

Governor Ahmed Ododo, who flagged off the distribution, praised the initiative and announced additional support for the Office of Persons with Disabilities Affairs, including an official vehicle, a promised bus, and a 50 per cent tuition waiver in state-owned tertiary institutions for PWDs.The Executive Secretary for Persons with Disabilities in Kogi State, Yakubu Abdulhakeem, and beneficiaries commended the programme, describing it as a boost to dignity, independence, and social inclusion.
