Military confirms probe into alleged coup plot against Tinubu, officers to face trial

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have confirmed that investigations into allegations of a coup plot involving some serving officers have been concluded, with those found to have a case to answer set to face military trial.

In a statement on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, said the report of the investigative panel has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with military regulations.

Uba confirmed that the probe examined allegations that some officers attempted to undermine the administration of President Bola Tinubu, following earlier reports in October that personnel ranging from the rank of Captain to Brigadier-General were arrested and detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

According to him, the investigation identified a number of officers whose alleged actions were inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards of the Armed Forces.

He said those involved will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels and tried in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to appropriate superior authority,” Uba said.

He added that making the outcome public was part of efforts to ensure accountability while upholding fairness and due process.

The military also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority, stressing that the measures are disciplinary and aimed at preserving order and operational effectiveness within the ranks.
