Nigeria to Host 2026 Africa Research Conference via NIPRD, SPARK Collaboration

By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

Nigeria is set to host the 2026 Africa Translational Research Bootcamp and Scientific Conference in Abuja under the collaboration of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) and the SPARK Translational Research Institute.

The Research Conference is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to convert scientific discoveries into practical healthcare solutions.

The Spark Translational Research Bootcamp and Conference 2026 Africa Edition which will hold 2-7 February 2026, will create a strategic opportunity to elevate Nigeria’s research profile.”

In a press release signed by Alaba Balogun Director, Information & Public Relations of the ministry, the research initiative, to be implemented in partnership with the Stanford University-based SPARK Global programme, underscores the growing recognition of translational research as a critical bridge between laboratory findings and real-world clinical and public health applications.

Providing an insight about the programme, the Director General of NIPRD, Dr. Obi Peter Adigwe, said, “Translational research goes beyond basic science by integrating healthcare delivery, policy, industry, and socio-economic considerations to ensure research outcomes deliver measurable impact.”

The Bootcamp Initiative, which was founded over two decades ago at Stanford University, the SPARK initiative is aimed at bridging the gap between laboratory scientific research and actual patient care and clinical treatments through education mentorship into tangible healthcare solutions.

“Since its inception, the SPARK initiative led by Professor Daria Mochly Rosen has reviewed more than 1,000 projects, supported the launch of dozens of startup companies, and facilitated multiple products entering clinical trials, with notable success in neglected areas such as maternal and child health, global health, and orphan diseases.”

Analysts say the initiative aligns with broader Federal Government reforms aimed at building local research capacity, reducing dependence on imports, and positioning Nigeria as a continental leader in science, technology, and healthcare innovation.

According to the health ministry, hosting the SPARK Africa Conference and Bootcamp in Abuja will not only expose Nigerian researchers to global mentorship and best practices but also attract international partnerships capable of accelerating innovation in life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
