Northern CAN Rejects Call for Removal of INEC Chairman, Warns Against Politicising Religion

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory has rejected calls by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) seeking the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, and Secretary General, Bishop Mohammed Naga, Northern CAN said the demand raises concerns about the politicisation of religion and its potential impact on public institutions. The association was reacting to reports that the Shari’ah Council had called for the INEC chairman’s removal over a legal brief allegedly linked to claims of persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

CAN questioned the motive behind the call and urged that concerns about public officials be addressed through lawful and institutional processes.Northern CAN emphasised that public office holders are entitled to freedom of religion and expression, noting that faith alone should not be used as a basis for questioning competence or integrity. It also cautioned against narratives that frame leadership of national institutions along religious lines.

The group further expressed concern over recent public comments by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, regarding the political implications of changes to party ticket arrangements ahead of the 2027 elections. CAN said such remarks, combined with ongoing criticism of the INEC chairman, could heighten religious sensitivities.

The association urged all stakeholders to prioritise national unity, competence and constitutional responsibilities, and called on the INEC chairman to remain focused on conducting credible elections.
