Kano Group Questions Senator Hanga’s Position on Kwankwasiyya, Cites Petition to ICPC

The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA) has criticised recent public comments by Senator Rufai Hanga regarding the Kwankwasiyya political movement and the reported defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the NNPP to the APC. In a statement signed by its coordinator, Isyaku Lawal Tofa, the group said the senator’s past and present remarks on the Kwankwasiyya movement appeared inconsistent and could create confusion among constituents.

KPRA recalled that Senator Hanga had previously described the movement, led by former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as a “cult group”, but later acknowledged its influence while criticising Governor Yusuf. According to the group, public office holders should maintain clear and consistent positions to sustain public trust. It urged the senator to clarify his views and promote what it called “principled political discourse” in Kano State.

The alliance also referenced a petition reportedly submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) by Isa Ado Maidoya, described as a former aide to the senator.

The petition alleges that the senator’s son, Muhammad Samir Hanga, was involved in the diversion of a federal government project valued at over ₦250 million. KPRA noted that the allegations have not been determined by authorities and called for a transparent investigation.Efforts to get an immediate response from Senator Hanga were not successful at the time of reporting.
