By Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State on Saturday laid to rest its late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, at his hometown of Ofoni in Sagbama Local Government Area, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former President Goodluck Jonathan among national leaders who paid tribute.

President Tinubu, represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, described Ewhrudjakpo’s death as a major loss to Bayelsa State and Nigeria, noting his record of wisdom, selfless service, and commitment to public duty. He prayed for comfort for the bereaved family and the people of the state.

Former President Jonathan said Ewhrudjakpo’s passing was deeply painful, describing him as a rare politician who earned widespread respect across political and social divides. He noted that the late deputy governor positively impacted many lives and prayed that God would raise another leader for the people of Ofoni.

Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, in an emotional tribute, said the loss of his deputy was difficult to comprehend, describing Ewhrudjakpo as a careful, principled, and dependable partner in governance. He thanked President Tinubu, the First Lady, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other Nigerians for their support during the period of mourning.

In his homily, Bishop Hyacinth Egbebo of the Catholic Diocese of Bomadi urged Christians to grieve with hope, describing Ewhrudjakpo as humble, generous, and forthright. The burial attracted dignitaries from across the country, including governors, former governors, lawmakers, and political leaders.
