Ramadan, Lent: Foundation Urges Journalists to Promote Peaceful Reporting

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Journalists in Nigeria have been urged to uphold the values of patience, empathy and unity in their work, particularly during the religious seasons of Ramadan and Lent, as part of efforts to promote national peace and development.

The Country Director of the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Nigeria, Rev. John Joseph Hayap, made the call during a breakfast meeting jointly organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council and the foundation in Kaduna. Hayap, who is also Chairman of the Northern Christian Association (NCA), said journalists play a crucial role in shaping public opinion, promoting dialogue and ensuring accountability in society.

“As journalists, you hold a powerful pen and an influential voice. You shape public opinion, highlight truths and hold power to account,” he said. He noted that in a diverse country like Nigeria, the responsibility of the media goes beyond reporting events to helping foster understanding and constructive dialogue among citizens.

Hayap emphasised the importance of responsible reporting, warning that the way information is presented can either escalate tensions or contribute to peacebuilding. “We live in times where information can either heal or hurt, unite or divide. The stories we tell and the angles we highlight can either fuel conflict or foster peace,” he said.

He encouraged journalists to avoid sensational reporting, give voice to marginalised communities and promote stories that highlight cooperation, resilience and hope.Hayap added that the Global Peace Foundation views the media as a critical partner in building a culture of peace and strengthening national unity. In his remarks, Chairman of the NUJ Kaduna State Council, Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended the foundation for partnering with the union to host the breakfast meeting and engage journalists during the Ramadan and Lent fasting period.
