Anambra Family Seeks Police Protection Over Alleged Intimidation in Ogidi

Members of the Amobi royal family in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, have called on security agencies to provide protection following alleged intimidation by suspected thugs in the community.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ogidi, a family representative, Chief Kene Amobi, said members are living in fear due to repeated threats and harassment. He appealed to the police and the state government to intervene and ensure their safety. Amobi alleged that unidentified individuals had disrupted community efforts to improve security, including the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras funded by family members in the diaspora.

According to him, some of the cameras were vandalised and removed shortly after installation. He also claimed that residents are reluctant to speak publicly due to fear of reprisals. “We cannot speak freely because of fear. People are worried about their safety,” he said. The family stated that the matter had been reported to the police, although they did not provide specific details of the report.

Reacting, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had no prior record of the complaint. “I am just hearing of the situation for the first time. There was no such report before the command,” he said, urging the family to provide details of where the incident was reported to enable follow-up. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
