Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative, GMI, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his recent State Visit to the United Kingdom at the invitation of King Charles III, describing the diplomatic outing as a major achievement for ordinary Nigerians.
The group said the visit, which it described as the first of such high-level engagement in 37 years, goes beyond ceremonial activities and signals Nigeria’s renewed relevance on the global stage.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, the organisation said the visit demonstrates Nigeria’s growing international influence and commitment to attracting investments that would directly benefit citizens at the grassroots.
According to Musa, while the ceremonial events at Windsor Castle attracted global attention, the organisation is more interested in the economic and developmental outcomes of the visit, particularly agreements capable of improving livelihoods.
He noted that the reported £746 million agreement to refurbish Apapa and Tin Can Island ports would improve trade efficiency, reduce delays in cargo clearance and ultimately help bring down the cost of goods in local markets.
The group also stated that President Tinubu’s engagements with British investors and the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in areas such as trade and solid minerals could stimulate job creation, particularly for young Nigerians.
GMI further highlighted the importance of bilateral security discussions during the visit, noting that strengthened international cooperation could support Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insecurity and enable farmers to safely return to their farmlands.
The organisation also praised the cultural aspect of the visit, noting that the participation of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in showcasing Nigerian arts and heritage helped promote the country’s creative potential on the global stage.
The group, however, raised concerns over what it described as a fake social media post allegedly attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump criticising the visit, insisting that the content was fabricated and intended to distract from the perceived gains of the trip.
GMI urged Nigerians to remain supportive of the administration, expressing optimism that the outcomes of the visit would translate into tangible economic benefits for citizens as the government continues to pursue its Renewed Hope agenda.
