Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed have held strategic meetings with key political figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso, amid stalled reconciliation efforts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The governors met with Seriake Dickson in Bauchi before travelling to Kano, where they joined Kwankwaso and Peter Obi during Eid-el-Fitr activities. Although officially described as a festive visit, sources indicated the meeting involved consultations on possible political alignments ahead of 2027.
The development comes as peace talks between the governors’ bloc and the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike appear to have reached a deadlock.
Tensions escalated following allegations by the Wike-backed camp that the governors’ faction, led by Tanimu Turaki, was attempting to disrupt the PDP’s national convention scheduled for March 29–30. The claim was dismissed by the opposing camp as blackmail, insisting it remains committed to reconciliation.
The party has been divided for nearly a year, with rival factions emerging after a disputed convention held in Ibadan. A recent Court of Appeal ruling nullified that exercise, affirming the authority of a caretaker committee set up by Wike’s allies.
Despite recent signals of willingness to resolve differences, disagreements over leadership and the planned convention continue to hinder progress.
Makinde, speaking on the crisis, warned against aligning with Wike’s camp, alleging it amounts to indirect support for Bola Tinubu ahead of the next election.
However, Mohammed called for unity, maintaining that internal disputes within the party remain resolvable through dialogue.
