Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled an attempted mass abduction by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters in Borno State, rescuing more than 150 civilians during an attack along the Buratai–Kamuya axis.
The Northeast Joint Task Force spokesman, Sani Uba, said in a statement on Monday that the incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. while troops were escorting travellers in the area.
According to the military, the attackers targeted a convoy of about 17 vehicles carrying men, women, and children, attempting to force them into the bush.
Troops engaged the assailants, while a Quick Reaction Force provided reinforcement and launched a pursuit toward the Mangari area. The sustained operation forced the attackers to abandon the civilians and vehicles, effectively preventing the abduction.
“All rescued civilians were safely recovered and moved to Buratai for onward reunification with their families,” the statement said.
During the pursuit, troops encountered an improvised explosive device along the Bula Zarma–Mangari route, leaving five personnel seriously injured. The injured soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment.
The military said the operation underscores ongoing efforts to protect civilians and maintain pressure on insurgent groups in the Northeast.
Authorities added that operations would continue to ensure security across the region, particularly ahead of the Easter period.
