FG Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Democratic Governance Through Partnerships

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to strengthen democratic governance as a foundation for economic development.Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, made the remarks at a national convening and report launch on the relationship between democracy and economic growth in Nigeria. He was represented by Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

According to a statement by the Office of the SGF, Akume said the government remains open to constructive, evidence-based engagement with the National Assembly, state governments, private sector actors, civil society, and development partners.

He emphasised the need to build public confidence in democratic institutions through transparency, credible electoral processes, effective dispute resolution, and strong legislative oversight. Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who chairs the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, also highlighted the importance of freedom and justice in sustaining democracy and supporting national development.

At the event, the foundation unveiled a report titled The Democracy Dividend: Governance and Growth. Executive Director Ann Iyonu said the report outlines policy recommendations focused on fiscal discipline, transparent procurement, and accountability. She called on policymakers and stakeholders to translate the report’s findings into practical reforms.
