COVID-19: NYSC donates hygiene materials to Anambra govt

The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday pledged to partner with Anambra Government in its efforts to minimise the spread of Coronavirus disease in the state.

Mr Kehinde Aremu, Coordinator of NYSC in Anambra, said in this Awka while handing over hand sanitisers and hand wash liquids produced by corps members in the state to Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Secretary to the State Government.

Aremu said the items donated would help residents of the state to observe effective hand wash and use of sanitisers as recommended by health experts and government as measures of staying safe.

He said the scheme would also donate about 1,500 units of face mask being produced by the corps members at NYSC garment factory at Mgbakwu, Awka North Council to the state government in the next three days.

The coordinator noted that NYSC was in the frontline of spreading awareness on COVID-19 at the early stage in the state but had to withdraw due to physical distancing rules.

He, however, said that with the stay-at-home order, corps members would continue to help the government in its containment and proactive efforts.

“We came here to make presentation of important hygiene materials produced by corps members under the skills acquisition programme.

“The corps members had made commitment that whatever the problem of the state government would be was their problem and that was in reaction to the warm welcome they received when they came here.

“We have a garment factory in Mgbakwu which is capable of producing hundreds of face mask within a short time but after this COVID-19, we will be making all forms of garment, including NYSC uniforms.

“I have well trained corps members and machines and if the state government places an order, we can give them millions provided there are materials,” he said.

Receiving the items, Chukwulobelu thanked the NYSC for the gesture saying the corps members had justified the skills trainings they got while in camp.

He also commended the scheme for making its Permanent Orientation Camp available to the government for an Isolation Centres.

Daybreak reports that the hand sanitisers and hand wash liquids were packaged in small pet bottles in cantons and different sizes of gallons.

Earlier, the state chapter of Ohanaeze presented a cheque of N200,000 to the state government as part of their support.

Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, chairman of the socio-cultural organisation in Anambra, also said their 18 seater bus had been volunteered for movement of persons and materials to any part of the state whenever the government required it.

He expressed regret the killing of a youth in the state by asecurity agency enforcing the lockdown and called on them to be civil with the people as nobody was happy with the social and economic situation of the country under the COVID-19 circumstance.
