‘Dine and Dash’ woman flees through restaurant’s air vent – but crashes through ceiling

A woman who was trying to get away with not paying her bill in a posh Canadian restaurant came a cropper after her escape plan took a dramatic wrong turn.

The bizarre incident took place back in March, but the video has been released today by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police [RCMP]as part of a campaign to give the public an insight into their work.

The woman had ordered and eaten her meal, but when the bill came she tried to do a runner. However, her elaborate exit plan involved going to the ladies’ loos and climbing to freedom through an air vent.

The would-be dine and dash expert was still crawling around in the restaurant’s ventilation system when RCMP officers arrived.

However while police and restaurant staff were still trying to decide how to deal with the trapped woman, she fell through the ceiling, landing right at the feet of the stunned mountie.

The March 2020 incident took place at an unnamed restaurant in the Western Canadian city of Burnaby, just east of Vancouver.

“We got a call from a manager of a restaurant up near Metrotown stating that one of their patrons didn’t want to pay their bill,” RCMP Corporal Michael Kalanj told local radio station News 1130.

“So, they went to the ladies’ room and began to climb into the vents in the ceiling,” Cpl Salani said.

“And, as you can see in the video,” he added, “she dropped in on us and made it easy for us to find her.”

Police said the woman did not require further medical attention and the restaurant decided not to press criminal charges after taking into account her “life circumstances and struggles.”

“We had some stern conversations with the lady and took some other avenues, which we won’t go into because there’s no charges,’”Cpl Kalanj said.

He added: “We’ll take it as a reminder to everyone that this is not safe, first and foremost. She could have gotten hurt really badly in this situation.’”
