Cholera outbreak hits Bauchi state with 309 new cases, 23 deaths

Amid the COVID- 19 pandemic in Nigeria, Bauchi State is currently battling Cholera outbreak as the state records 109 cases from four local government Areas namely Bauchi, Toro, Shira and Misua with an additional 200 fresh cases

Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Rilwanu Mohammad via a telephone interview with Daybreak Correspondent said, ” the outbreak of Cholera has reached an alarming stage as 200 more cases were presented two days ago at the Cholera Treatment Centre in Bauchi.

Rilwanu said that the State is on top of the situation and managing cholera patients with the support MSF, ( Doctors without Boarders) in special Isolation Centres at each General Hospital centres across the state.

“Also giving support for treatment of cholera outbreak in the state are agencies like WHO and UNICEF, the RUWASA, BSWB and SEMA.”

He said, ” the Bauchi State government is giving waiver to patients instead of them to pay for treatment , the state governor Bala Mohammad has ordered that all patients should be given free drugs and food instead of paying for their treatment.

According to the Executive Chairman of BSPHCB, UNICEF has supplied 100 cartons of Oral Rehydration Therapy, ORS and 200 cartons of water guard to the state to help contain the speared of the water borne disease.

So far since the cholera outbreak the state has recorded a total of 732 cases with 28 deaths across 13 LGAs with a Case Fatality of 3.8, the Epi- Week Report revealed

According to the Bauchi State Cholera Outbreak Situation Report of Epi-;week 22 signed by Benjamin Ghandi the index case was from a 37 year old woman from. Magami Community of Burra ward in Ningi LGA who presented at Burra General Hospital.

Another index case presented at Bauchi LGA was a 23 year old male from Kandahar settlement of Dan Amar B ward who presented at the Emergency Unit of ABUTH Bauchi on 15, May, 2021.

Bauchi and Toro LGAs account for 575 of total cases, the report stated.

Meanwhile the Cholera transmission is still active in Bauchi, Ganjuwa, Misau and Toro LGAs with an additional 200 new cases in the last two days, Rilwanu emphasized.
