Abia LG Chairman Affirms Commitment to Eradicating Female Genital Mutilation

By Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu

The Chairman of Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State, Hon. Maxwell Nwadike, has reaffirmed his strong commitment to discouraging Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the region.

Nwadike made this pledge during an event marking the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, a program jointly organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Obingwa Local Government Area.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injuries to female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice has no health benefits and can lead to severe complications, including:

– Excessive bleeding and urinary issues

– Cysts, infections, and menstrual difficulties

– Complications during childbirth

– Increased risk of newborn deaths

FGM is internationally recognized as a violation of human rights, reflecting deep-rooted gender inequality and constituting an extreme form of discrimination against girls and women. It is mostly performed on minors, violating their fundamental rights to health, security, and physical integrity. In extreme cases, FGM has resulted in death, making it a serious public health and human rights issue.

Hon. Nwadike commended the First Lady of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, for her unwavering efforts in raising awareness on the dangers of FGM. He stressed the importance of a cultural shift, urging communities to adopt alternative, non-harmful rites of passage that respect the dignity and well-being of girls and women.

“We must change the narrative and embrace traditions that uplift and protect our women and girls. Ending FGM is a collective responsibility, and we must work together to eradicate this harmful practice.”

Nwadike pledged full support for initiatives aimed at eliminating FGM and called on all well-meaning Nigerians to unite in the fight against this harmful practice.

“It is time to stand against FGM, protect our girls, and promote a future where every woman and girl can live free from harm.”

With ongoing awareness campaigns and strong government backing, Obingwa Local Government remains dedicated to ensuring a future free from FGM for all girls and women in Abia State.
