Akpabio Reaffirms Senate Support for Proposed Anioma State Creation

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has reiterated the National Assembly’s support for the proposed creation of Anioma State, saying the initiative remains under legislative consideration.

Akpabio made the remarks at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress in Asaba, where he also affirmed backing for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said the proposal includes Asaba as the capital of the proposed Anioma State, while Warri could serve as the capital of a reconfigured Delta State, citing its infrastructure and economic significance.

According to Akpabio, the demand for Anioma State reflects longstanding calls for equity, improved governance and regional development. He noted that the proposal, championed by Ned Nwoko, is receiving attention in the current National Assembly. He added that, if approved through the constitutional process, the creation of a new state could support decentralisation and grassroots development.

Speaking separately, Nwoko described the initiative as a collective aspiration of the people of Delta North and pledged to continue advocating for it. State creation in Nigeria requires constitutional amendments and approval by the National Assembly and other statutory bodies.
