Unidentified persons have destroyed over four hectares of farmland in Gassa community, Ropp District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, using herbicides.
It was gathered that the incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday, affected more than 13 dry-season farms cultivated with maize and hot pepper.
Lyop Anna, a farmer in the community, who spoke to our correspondent, said the substances were allegedly sprayed overnight on crops that were already nearing harvest, particularly hot pepper.
According to her, the affected farms, which were previously green and healthy, have begun to wither as the impact of the chemicals becomes evident.
Reacting to the development, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) described the incident as an economic setback for local farmers and a threat to livelihoods in the area.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the group expressed concern over what it described as a recurring pattern of farmland destruction in parts of Barkin Ladi.
The statement noted that similar incidents were reported in 2025 in some communities within Fan District, where crops close to harvest were also affected.
The association said the development could have implications for food security in the area, especially as farmers prepare for the new planting season while still harvesting from irrigation activities.
It called on relevant authorities and security agencies to investigate the incident and take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence.
The group also appealed for increased surveillance around farming communities and urged security outfits, including agro-based units, to strengthen protection for farmers and their produce.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from security agencies or the Plateau State Government regarding the incident.
