Army Investigates Soldier Involved in Police Officer’s Death in Lagos

The Nigerian Army has announced an investigation into the death of a police officer in Lagos. The incident occurred on October 9, 2024, when soldiers from Ojo Cantonment Barracks confronted a colleague for driving against traffic near Volks Bus Stop on Ojo Iyana Iba Road.

Reports indicate that during this altercation, a soldier fatally stabbed Police Officer Saka Ganiyu. Following the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, released a statement expressing regret.

In the statement, the Army said, “We regret to inform the public of this unfortunate incident involving a soldier and a policeman due to an alleged traffic rule violation.” The statement further noted that the soldier involved has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and disciplinary action.

The Army emphasized its commitment to the Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. They have continuously advised personnel against actions that could harm the Army’s reputation and damage relationships with other security agencies and the public.

The General Officer Commanding 81 Division expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the Nigeria Police. The Army reassured the public that a thorough investigation would take place. They also promised that appropriate disciplinary measures would be enforced to ensure justice.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Army stated that it would continue collaborating with other security agencies to maintain security and protect lives and property in line with its constitutional mandate.
