Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, announced on Wednesday that the state is fully prepared to host the 8th National Youth Games, set to kick off in Asaba on Thursday.
Governor Oborevwori made this disclosure while speaking to journalists shortly after inspecting facilities at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, the state capital, which will serve as the main venue for the games.
The Governor, who toured the swimming pool, shooting range, and other facilities at the Indoor Sports Hall, was accompanied by the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Chief Solomon Ogba, and top officials of the State Sports Commission.
He revealed that 5,776 athletes from 29 states had already arrived and registered for the games ahead of Thursday’s opening ceremony.
“We are ready to host the National Youth Games. You know, tomorrow is the opening ceremony. As of this morning, 29 states have arrived, and 5,776 athletes have been registered. I am confident that this year’s event will be even better than last year’s,” Governor Oborevwori stated.
He highlighted the positive outcomes of hosting the games, noting, “You can see the results from the last Olympics in Paris. Favour Ofili performed exceptionally well, even though she didn’t win a medal. She is a product of these games.”
“We are hoping to discover talents even better than Ofili in this year’s games. I assure our people that this year will surpass the previous one,” the Governor added.
