ASUU Expresses Concern over Dissolution of University Governing Councils

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has conveyed its dismay regarding the federal government’s recent decision to dissolve the governing councils of universities across the nation.

The union has characterized this decision as objectionable due to its premature termination of the councils’ tenures, and has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider this course of action.

Comrade Christopher Piwuna, the National Vice Chairman of ASUU at the University of Jos, voiced his concerns during a presentation at an event held in honor of retiring educators at Joseph Sarwuaan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), previously known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), located in Benue State.

Piwuna argued against the dissolution of governing councils and the subsequent delegation of their authority to the Federal Ministry of Education or the National Universities Commission (NUC), emphasizing the importance of adhering to university laws.

He underscored, “Permitting a leadership vacuum would also be detrimental to the universities, as unscrupulous vice-chancellors and ministry officials might collaborate to undermine our academic institutions unless such a blatant disregard for the universities’ founding laws is addressed.”
