Biden’s first campaign fundraiser with Obama raises $4 million

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s first 2020 fundraiser with former President Barack Obama has netted more than $4 million from more than 120,000 people, ahead of their joint appearance on Tuesday, the campaign said.

The virtual event could amount to Biden’s largest haul from small-dollar donors and comes on the heels of the Democratic Party and his campaign out-raising President Donald Trump in May for the first time, $80.8 million to $74 million.

The Republican president, who has been campaigning for a second term since 2017, still has a spending advantage, ahead of the Nov. 3 presidential election.

Trump’s campaign, party and other fundraising entities had $265 million in cash at the end of May.

The Democrats and Biden, who launched his campaign in April 2019, held a combined $122 million, not including some fundraising entities that have not disclosed their records.

Early in the 2020 campaign, Biden’s weak fundraising numbers compared to some of his Democratic competitors were a source of concern.

But he has seen his fundraising from donors pick up in recent weeks as his lead in national opinion polls grew and the country reacted to incidents of police brutality.

The event on Tuesday also shows the drawing power of Obama.

He endorsed Biden, his former vice-president, in April but has not been actively campaigning for Biden as in-person events were largely canceled, due to the coronavirus.

The Biden campaign is hoping to come close to matching Trump’s war chest so it can counter his advertising, get-out-the-vote operations in battleground states, and eventual campaign travel with their own.

A high-dollar fundraising event held last week for Biden with 620 donors and hosted by Sen. Elizabeth Warren took in $6 million, the most ever for Biden’s campaign.(Reuters/NAN)

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Tuesday, remanded one Micheal Adunola, 32, and Olawoyin Atinuke, 32, in prison custody over alleged murder of a mother and her daughter.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on May 23, 2020 around 12.00 pm at Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said that the defendants conspired among themselves to commit murder.

He added that the defendants unlawfully killed one Esther Adunola and her 14-month-old daughter, Glory Adunola.

The prosecutor stated further that the defendants improperly and indecently interfered with the corpse of Esther and her daughter, Glory by cutting off their heads and hands.

Osanyintuyi said that the offence contravened sections 242, 319(1) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The plea of the defendants were not taken, despite the fact that their counsels, Mr M.I. Babawale and Mr Adewale Adegbami, announced their appearance, respectively.

Magistrate Muhibah Olatunji did not grant the defendants bail on the ground that her court lacked jurisdiction to try murder case.

Olatunji asked the prosecutor to duplicate their case file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution at the Osun State Ministry of Justice for legal advice.

She ordered that the defendants be remanded at Ilesa Correctional centre and adjourned the case till July 28, for mention.(NAN)

Our governorship primary ‘ll hold as scheduled, Edo PDP Chairman insists

The Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, has said that the party’s governorship primary will hold on Thursday as scheduled.
Aziegbemi gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Tuesday.
One of the PDP governorship aspirants, Mr Omeregie Ogbeide-Ihama, had gone to court to get a restraining order stopping the state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, from participating in the party’s primary.
Ogbeide-Ihama, representing Oredo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, had, on Monday, approached a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, seeking an interim order stopping the governor from participating in the primary.
His reason was that the timeline set for the exercise and which was widely publicised by the party for entry had closed.
Justice E. A. Obile had granted the prayers of the plaintiff and adjourned till June 24 the substantive hearing of the suit.
However, the PDP chairman said that the primary would hold as scheduled, assuring that it would get everything sorted out by Wednesday.
“PDP is a family and we do not believe in legal issues to solve all our problems. We believe that we can sort out some of these problems through political means.
“And that is what we are doing at present. We are exploring both ways. Clearly, we will get this sorted out by Wednesday and we will have our primary on Thursday without any encumbrances. (NAN)
