Gang storms isolation centre, forcibly removes Covid-19 patient in Nigeria

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Nigeria’s Delta state has condemned a gang which stormed the facility and forcibly removed a Covid-19 patient from the premises.

53-year-old Nwachukwu Michael Mordi, who tested positive for the virus on May 23, was taken away from the centre by seven men who claimed to be his relatives.

Mordi, a chief nursing officer at the central hospital in Agbor, reportedly tried to resist his admission to the centre on May 24.

The Delta state ministry of health said the men who took Mordi away had not endangered just the health of the broader community, but theirs as well.

In a statement, FMC public relations officer Ojebo Donald said management at the institution had raised concerns about Mordi’s aggressive behaviour at the isolation centre.

Mordi reportedly threatened staff and rejected medication, Donald said. The public relations officer alerted members of the public against coming into contact with the Covid-19 positive man as well as those who had been in close proximity to him since his departure from the isolation centre.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the West African country has recorded 10 819 cases of Covid-19, out of which 3 239 people have subsequently been discharged while 314 have died.

The Delta state has recorded 98 cases, including eight deaths

Information commissioner Charles Aniagwu said the state would concentrate beefing up internal security in its efforts to ensure the well-being of residents and the safety of property.

  • How MC Oluomo’s mum died in the mansion he built for her during COVID-19 lockdown

How MC Oluomo’s mum died in the mansion he built for her during COVID-19 lockdown

During the early stage of the Covid-19 lockdown, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos branch’s boss, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo lost his 87 years old mother, Alhaja Sinat Abebi Akinsanya.

Kemi Filani News recounts that Alhaja Abebi Zinat Omotonwo who passed away peacefully at her residence was buried there the same day according to Islamic rites.

MC Oluomo in a new interview has revealed that his mum’s death came to him as a rude shock. He further disclosed how glad he was to have moved her into the mansion he built for her before her death despite the covid-19 lockdown.

In his words: “I never saw it coming that my mum would leave so soon. Most especially because she wasn’t sick at all. I remember the day vividly that my mum chatted with me for many hours before she died. We have finished eating “Sahur” in her house during the lockdown and she told me about her life history. How she grew up.

She also told me everything about my dad. All the things she told me were strange to me as she had never told me anything like that before. She explained that I should never be tired of giving that I took that after she and I told her: “Maami, I have an appointment, with the governor by 10 a.m. I can’t afford to be late”.

discussed till a few minutes to 6 and she said okay, let’s us go and pray. She went to her room to pray, while I went to mine. After praying, I checked her through my phone as I have a device that I could use to monitor my mum wherever she might be. There was no day I didn’t see my mum before her death. She was always at home praying most of the time.

So, I checked my phone and I saw that she was praying. I said let me rest a little before going to see her when I would be leaving in the morning. I believed I dozed off for a few minutes, then I checked on her again. At that point, she was sitting at the tip of her bed praying, then she slept. I was like, why was Mama sleeping like that?

Why was she not sleeping well. So, I said let me prepared for my appointment. Then while checking on her again, I saw that one of her closest aides, who is a family member was checking on her, holding her head. In my mind, I asked why was she acting like that?

I saw that she was crying on my phone then I ran there to see Mama. My question to her was “kilose Mama”, and she replied Mama ti ku”. I checked and I was like “Mama was gone”. I couldn’t hold back tears, but I learnt a lesson.

What lesson if you ask? I learnt that we should never postpone whatever we have in mind to do. We must appreciate our parents while they are alive. My greatest regret in Life would have been that I didn’t bring my mum to the new house I bought for her before her demise.

The house where she was buried was built for her and it was ready during the Covid-19. Even when people said I should let her stay at her old house till, after the Covid-19, I said ‘no’ she should be brought to the new house.

I made sure I furnished the house to taste and did everything that would make her wake up happy every day. What if I didn’t do that during the lockdown? Everything in the house was bought new. I just wanted her to be happy. What if I didn’t do that, for her before her death. I would have felt bad he revealed.”

Beverly further revealed that the world isn’t only battling coronavirus. She said there are other epidemics and just like the virus, the numbers keep rising.

“We are battling police brutality, sexual predators, pedophiles, rape apologists, racists, murderers and terrorists.” She said

    Read all she wrote below;

“I didn’t sleep until 5am this morning. I feel completely drained. As I deal with one horrific story in the news, another hits me over the head with a fire extinguisher… Like the one that was used to kill Uwa after being raped in her place of worship. The news almost feels similar to a bullet piercing through me as I come to terms with the fact that the police may never be our friends, just look at what they did to 16 year old Tina and so many others.

I mean, the amount of bad news in the world right now is suffocating, it almost feels like I can’t breathe…the pain in my chest…you would think that there’s a knee pressing down on my neck blocking the very thing that keeps me alive….I’m gasping for air.

George Floyd did not deserve that… We do not deserve the continuous hatred we receive from our own people as well as those who simply hate us for the colour of our skin. We are not only battling coronavirus, we have other epidemics and just like the virus, the numbers keep rising. We are battling police brutality, sexual predators, pedophiles, rape apologists, racists, murderers and terrorists.

These are all epidemics but unlike Coronavirus, you are not required to cover your mouth in order to survive…you are required to use it! Do not be silenced! We need SCAPEGOATS, we need justice! BlackLivesMatter #JusticeForTina #JusticeForUwa #RapeIsACRIME #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd”
