    Tinubu hails Oshiomhole at 68

The National leader of APC, Sen. Bola Tinubu, has commended the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, for his contributions to the development of the country.

Tinubu gave the commendation in a statement in Lagos, by his Media Adviser, Mr Tunde Rahman, to commemorate the 68th birthday anniversary of Oshiomhole.

Tinubu described Oshiomhole as “a politician of remarkable acumen, a tireless campaigner and an adept mobiliser.

“As a veteran labour leader, two times governor of Edo, progressive ally and politician of remarkable acumen, you have come a long way and contributed immensely to our party and our country.

“Oshiomhole still has a lot to contribute to the party and Nigeria.

“A tireless campaigner and adept mobiliser, you steered our party through the landslide re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari and victory for APC candidates in the 2019 national and states elections.

“You still have much to contribute to our party and country,” Tinubu said.

The APC leader also prayed that God would grant Oshiomhole more years, robust health and continued energy as he serves the APC and the nation in the pursuit of good governance for all people. (NAN)

  • S. Africa to conduct mass community testing for COVID-19, says Health minister

    S. Africa to conduct mass community testing for COVID-19, says Health minister

South Africa will conduct mass community testing for coronavirus as cases continued to rise, according to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

An uptick in local transmissions prompted the need to prepare for mass community testing, the minister said while updating the nation on the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Until Friday, the number of confirmed coronavirus infections in South Africa has risen to 1,505, an increase of 43 from Thursday’s figure, Mkhize said.

Two more patients have died, both in KwaZulu-Natal Province, bringing the death toll to seven, he said.

The two victims were an 80-year-old man who died on April 1 and an 81-year-old woman who died on April 2, according to Mkhize.

With more local transmissions, South Africa is going to roll out mass community testing, Mkhize said in Khayelitsha, an impoverished township in Cape Town, where several positive cases have been reported.

“We have identified areas of priority,” he said without elaboration, adding that “we are ready to give additional support and reinforcement to the areas that need assistance.”

Mkhize said densely populated areas such as townships have reported COVID-19 cases, giving the pandemic a “new dynamic.”

The government wants to hit these areas first when it comes to taking measures to curb the spread, said Mkhize.

On Wednesday, the minister launched 60 mobile sampling and testing units in a bid to scale up the capacity of testing citizens across the country.

These units are part of the massive testing project announced late last month by President Cyril Ramaphosa, where workers will go out to different areas to test people for COVID-19.

South Africa, which reported its first case on March 5, has the largest number of COVID-19 infections on the African continent. (dpa/NAN)

  • Americans should wear non-medical masks, but Trump will not

Americans should wear non-medical masks, but Trump will not

US President Donald Trump on Friday unveiled new guidelines saying that every American should wear non-medical face masks while in cramped public settings amid the coronavirus pandemic, while also saying he would not heed the “voluntary” advice.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending that Americans wear “a basic cloth or fabric mask that can either be purchased online or simply made at home,” Trump said during a press briefing, adding: “This is voluntary, I don’t think I’m going to be doing it.”

The new guidance comes amid concerns that up to 25 per cent of people infected with Covid-19, the disease caused by the new virus, are not showing symptoms and could be unwittingly spreading it.

Face coverings will help “slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others,” the CDC guidelines stated.

When asked why he does not want to wear a mask, the president emphasized that voluntary nature of the guidelines, adding that the covering would not fit the decorum of his office.

“Somehow sitting in the Oval Office behind that beautiful resolute desk, the great resolute desk, I think wearing a face mask as I greet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens. I don’t know, somehow I don’t see it for myself,” he said.

The new recommendations come as New York continues to be the most hard-hit state in the US reporting 562 deaths on Friday, the state’s largest single-day death toll, Governor Andrew Cuomo told a daily press briefing.

New York confirmed coronavirus cases also passed 100,000 on Friday, with over half of the infections in New York City.

With the need for ventilators and other medical equipment remaining dire, Cuomo said he would sign an executive order allowing the state to take supplies from private hospitals and companies and redistribute them to hospitals most in need.

The US Department of Defence on Friday said it was changing rules that led to delays in patients being admitted to the USNS Comfort after the ship was criticized for failing to relieve New York City’s swamped hospitals, as coronavirus cases continued to surge.

The 1,000-bed hospital ship had only taken 20 patients aboard as of late Thursday, the New York Times reported citing officials, while city hospitals struggled to handle the thousands infected with coronavirus.

This was due to strict rules preventing people infected with the virus or afflicted with some 49 other medical conditions from being accepted on the vessel.

Delays were also caused by patients having to be screened for Covid-19 at local hospitals before being taken to the ship.

On Friday, the Pentagon announced that “screening for care on the USNS Comfort will be modified and will now occur pier-side in an effort to reduce the backlog at some of the nearby New York hospitals.”

Cuomo also said the Javits Center, a huge convention centre in Manhattan that was turned into a makeshift hospital for non-coronavirus patients, was now receiving Covid-19 patients along with the Navy hospital ship after the federal government granted his request.

The governor said he believed the Navy did not want to accept those infected with the virus on the USNS Comfort because “it would be too hard to disinfect the ship afterwards.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was “sure that ship will be very full soon.”

“We’re going to need the Comfort and every other place in the city that we can get hospital beds up and running because we’re expecting a huge surge just in the next few days,” de Blasio told broadcaster MSNBC.

Later, the mayor said the city would need 15,000 more ventilators and 45,000 more medical personnel to fight the pandemic through April and May.

He called for a national enlistment programme for doctors and nurses to be sent to New York City.

The city on Friday sent out an emergency phone alert to residents calling for more health workers to volunteer. (dpa)

  • Trump fires intelligence watchdog involved in impeachment case

Trump fires intelligence watchdog involved in impeachment case

US President Donald Trump on Friday said he fired Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for the US intelligence community who dealt with the whistleblower complaint that ultimately led to his impeachment trial.

Trump said he was exercising his power as president to remove Atkinson from office, citing a lack of confidence in him in a letter addressed to Adam Schiff, the head of the House Intelligence Committee, and Devin Nunes, the top Republican on the committee.

“[It] is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general,” Trump wrote. “That is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general.”

The president said that the firing would be effective in 30 days and that he would be submitting a new nominee for the position to the Senate “at a later date.”

Schiff called the firing a “blatant attempt to gut the independence of the Intelligence Community and retaliate against those who dare to expose presidential wrongdoing.”

“It puts our country and national security at even greater risk,” he added in a tweet in which he also shared the letter.

Atkinson received the whistleblower complaint that eventually snowballed into Trump’s impeachment investigation.

He opposed the decision by then-acting director of national intelligence Joseph Maguire not to transmit the complaint to the intelligence committee.

In February, Trump was acquitted by the Senate on both articles of impeachment when Democrats fell far short of the two-thirds supermajority needed for the removal of the Republican president.

The trial revolved around allegations that Trump attempted to pressure Ukraine to pursue investigations that could help his 2020 re-election bid. (dpa)

  • China holds three minutes of silence for Covid-19 victims

China holds three minutes of silence for Covid-19 victims

China held three minutes of silence during Tomb Sweeping Day on Saturday for people who have died in the coronavirus outbreak.

During the national mourning event, national flags across China and at Chinese embassies and consulates abroad were lowered to half-mast, and public entertainment activities halted.

The three minutes of silence started on time at 10 am (0200 GMT). At the same time, car horns honked, trains and ships sounded their whistles, and air defence alarms went off.

The event is intended to honour “martyrs and dead compatriots killed in the fight against the new coronavirus epidemic,” the State Council said on Friday.

Tomb Sweeping Day is an annual Chinese holiday during which families gather to honour their ancestors and clean their tombs.

However, with restrictions in place to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading, this year many provinces asked residents not to make the pilgrimage to the graves but instead to honour the dead from home.

In Wuhan in Hubei province, the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak in China, all public commemoration events were prohibited. Cemeteries organized collective rites for the dead. Platforms have also been set up on the internet in which offerings can be given virtually.

At a ceremony in Beijing, head of state and party leader Xi Jinping and the Chinese leadership, sporting dark suits with white mourning flowers on the lapels of their jackets, bowed in front of a national flag waving at half-mast.

So far, China has counted over 80,000 coronavirus cases. The death toll reached 3,326 on Saturday, according to official figures. Over 76,000 patients have so far recovered.

Officials said more than 3,000 medical personnel had become infected with the novel coronavirus, of whom 14 have died.

Cases worldwide have topped 1 million, and deaths exceeded 50,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University in the United States. (dpa)

  • COVID-19 lockdown: EKEDC donates food items worth N26.6m to LASG

COVID-19 lockdown: EKEDC donates food items worth N26.6m to LASG

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Friday donated food items worth N26.6 million to the Lagos State Government to support relief efforts to citizens during the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown.
The food items, presented by Mr Adeoye Fadeyibi, Managing Director, EKEDC, were received on behalf of the government by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Gbolahan Lawal.
The items include 3,000 bags of 5kg rice, 3, 000 bags of 5kg beans, 3, 000 bags of 5kg garri, 3, 000 cartons of tomato paste, 3, 000 cartons of groundnut oil and 2, 000 cartons of noodles.

Fadeyibi thanked the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his team for their commendable and rapid response in handling the COVID-19 situation.
According to him, a large majority of individuals who earn a living from their daily activities have been having hard times, and the economy is slowing down due to the state-wide lockdown.

Fadeyibi said: ” EKEDC will not stand aside and watch, as this virus ravages our city and threatens our fellow citizens and our way of life.

“That is why our board and management has approved a budget of N150 million towards assisting the government during this crisis.
“The approved budget will be used to provide relief items for the low income earners and less privileged.
“It will also be used to invest in infrastructure to deliver consistent electricity to isolation centers within our coverage area.”
He urged the Private Sector to support the government by lending a helping hand to communities in Lagos State during the critical period.
“We continue to pray and hope that all the factors in play in Lagos state and across Nigeria result in our country being less vulnerable and more fortunate than others have been, as we battle this pandemic.
“We all are required to be conscious of and practice social distancing as we continue maintaining high standards of hygiene, sanitary conditions and safety in order to beat and survive this COVID-19 pandemic.”
Responding, Lawal commended EKEDC for the gesture and called on other corporate entities to emulate the DisCo by supporting the government’s relief efforts.
Lawal assured the donors that the items would be utilised judiciously to ensure that they bring succour to the people of the state, especially those worst hit by the lockdown.
He also debunked the claim that only members of the ruling party were benefiting from the relief support.
The commissioner said that items were being distributed through Community Development Associations, councillors, religious bodies and traditional rulers.
“So, Lagosians should just be calm. They should stay at home and maintain social distancing guidelines to help us contain this pandemic.
” We are targeting 200, 000 at the first instance, of which we will be able to complete 100, 000 households by Saturday.
“We are also restrategising on the model of distribution and we are calling for more support because we want to be distributing house by house.
“We don’t know how long this lockdown will be, but we want to assure Lagosians that a lot of people are supporting us and they should bear with the government because it is for the good of everybody,” he said.(NAN)

  • FIRS collects N1.123trn revenue in first quarter

FIRS collects N1.123trn revenue in first quarter

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) says it has collected N1.123 trillion revenue in the First Quarter (Q1) of 2020.

The FIRS made this known in a statement issued by Mr Abdullahi Ismaila, Director, Communications and Liaison Department of the service in Abuja on Thursday.

He said the service recorded seven per cent increase in its collection target for the first quarter of 2020 in spite the global economic challenge owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

Ismaila stated that there was unprecedented increment in the first quarter 2020 when compared to the same period in the last fiscal year, 2019’s first quarter.

“A comparative analysis of the two periods shows that the FIRS collected N1.123 trillion in the first quarter of 2020, N1.046 trillion for the first quarter in 2019.

“A massive 568 per cent increase in Capital Gains Tax from N96.408 million in Q1 2019 to N643.935 million in Q1 2020 which gave the Service’s revenue its biggest lift.

“No doubt as a direct result of blockage of leaks in that revenue flow by the wide-ranging reforms inaugurated at the FIRS by its newly appointed Executive Chairman, Mr Muhammad Nami, immediately he assumed office in December 2019,” he said.

He noted that similarly, the service recorded 522 per cent increase in collection from the NITDEF to bag N690.532 million in Q1 2020, compared to N111.037 million in Q1 2019.

The director recalled that since he took the mantle of leadership at the FIRS, Nami has instituted a regime of policy reforms anchored on deployment of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to block tax leakages and motivated members of staff by restoring a number of their statutory roles hitherto outsourced to private consultants.

“Also within the period under review, Gas Income Tax increased by 286 per cent in Q1 2020, which amounted to N11.491 billion compared to N2.9 billion raked in in Q12020.
“Similarly, Company Income Tax (CIT) collected in Q1 2020 jumped by 135 per cent to N95.733 billion corresponding figure of N40.696 billion recorded in Q1 2019.
“Stamp Duty collection in Q1 2020 is N4.602 billion, which represents 36 per cent increase to the Q1 2019 figure of N3.386 billion

“In the education sector, the FIRS recorded 81 per cent increase in its collection of Education Tax, which is N13.102 billion in Q1 2020 compared to N7.229 billion in Q1 2019.

“Both Nigeria Customs Service and Non-Import VAT also increased by 11 per cent in Q1 2020 N63.296 billion and N261.245 billion, respectively, from the Q1 2019 figures of N57.008 billion and N236.030 billion in that order”.

He added that moving forward the on-going reforms and deployment of more ICT platforms at the FIRS would take its root in Q2, while the service expected a brighter outlook in revenue collections. (NAN)

Infantino says football will be totally different after coronavirus

Football will be totally different when it eventually resumes after the coronavirus outbreak, the head of global body FIFA Gianni Infantino said on Thursday.

“Football will come back, and when it does, we’ll celebrate coming out of a nightmare together,” he told the Italian news agency ANSA in an interview.

“There is one lesson, however, that both you and me must have understood: the football that will come after the virus will be totally different…(more) inclusive, more social and more supportive, connected to the individual countries and at the same time more global, less arrogant and more welcoming.”

He added: “We will be better, more human and more attentive to true values.”

Last week, Infantino told Italian sports media outfit Gazzetta dello Sport that it was the right time to take a step back.

He added that it was time to reform a sport where fixture lists have become overloaded and financial resources increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few elite clubs.

Infantino suggested there could be “fewer, but more interesting tournaments. Maybe fewer squads, but more balance. Fewer, but more competitive, matches to safeguard the health of the players.”

Later on Thursday, Infantino told the annual congress of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) that “it is our responsibility as football administrators, first of all, to ensure football can survive and secondly move forward once again.”

“On the international match calendar we have to look for global solutions to tackle these global problems in a spirit of cooperation and solidarity,” Infantino said in a video link from Zurich.

“Everyone has different interests, but we must talk and put on the table topics that we perhaps didn’t discuss in the past.’’(Reuters/NAN)

The Waiting Game: For NBA coaches that’s a new schedule

Orlando’s Steve Clifford figures he’s like every other NBA coach right now: Wake up, go to whatever now serves as the office, study his own team, maybe think about possible opponents, and resume planning.

Of course, nobody knows what they’re planning for — or when these plans will get used.

A stoppage in play doesn’t mean vacation time has arrived for NBA coaches, especially those like Clifford in position to take their teams to the post season — assuming this pandemic-interrupted season is able to resume.

They’re all spending more time at home, not able to run practices, but none seem to be sitting idly. (AP/NAN)
