INSPIRATION: When Sleep Escapes the Soul

    With Mary Ewa

If God did not create sleep for man, the soul would have been so weary.
For sleep, in its silent kindness, is God’s way of reminding man that even the strongest need to shut down. Burdens grow heavier in the dead of night, especially when sleep eludes and time stretches endlessly — when thoughts are stripped bare and truth walks unashamed.

It is in those quiet, restless hours that lies find rest and truth awakens. When the body lies still, the mind begins its long pilgrimage through memories, regrets, and silent prayers. I lie here, flipping through the worn pages of my life, wondering how much harder existence would be if sleep wasn’t a sacred part of man’s night — when darkness itself commands a shutdown and tiredness calls for surrender.

Yet today, many have lost that gift. Many are crushed under the invisible weight of their burdens — burdens heavy enough to break even the strongest human spirit. All because of certain actions taken, or actions we failed to take.

Life remains an irony. One would think that the successful, surrounded by abundance, would be the ones to rest easy. But the truth is often the opposite. It is not always the successful who find sleep — sometimes, it is sleep that finds its way more freely into the eyes of those who have little.

The wealthy lie awake, minds entangled in the fear of losing what they’ve built, paranoid about those who wish to take it. Their thoughts race faster than time. Meanwhile, the not-so-successful — the ones with little or nothing to their name — sleep soundly, snoring their nights away in borrowed dreams. In that dreamland, they have enough to eat and drink; they live large in the soft corners of their subconscious, tasting a life they may never hold awake.

What a mystery — that peace often dwells with those who have nothing to protect.

Worries grow loudest at night. They echo through the walls of the mind when everything else is silent. The heart beats differently in those moments, enslaved by the noise within. Thoughts, like restless birds, refuse to perch.

And yet, maybe that’s why God made sleep. Not just as rest for the body, but as release for the soul. A pause button for the chaos of being human. Without it, man would drown in the flood of his own thoughts.

So tonight, as I lay here between wakefulness and surrender, I’m reminded that sleep is not weakness — it is grace.
And when it escapes you, may your restless thoughts at least find meaning, may your truth walk freely, and may your heart — though tired — still find peace in the knowing that even in sleeplessness, the soul is refined and restored…

  • INSPIRATION: Do Not Let Life Define You

INSPIRATION: Do Not Let Life Define You

    With Mary Ewa

Though bashed, pained, rejected, and even abandoned, do not let life determine who you become. Life is a school, and its lessons are learned through these different, difficult phases. Most times, the good people suffer. I have tried so hard to understand this, to make sense of the injustice—but some things in life are never meant to be understood, no matter how long we may live.

Quit comparison. It will only make your journey harder. Remember, no two lives are the same. Each of us has a path uniquely ours. While some may appear to have it all, you may never know their quiet cries. And some may be so busy seeing what they lack that they never appreciate the abundance they already possess.

In life, some people will love you, some will hurt you; some will break you, and others will mend you. Each of these is a phase we must experience at one point or another. No one is exempted—not even God. We individually and collectively break His heart daily. Sometimes we fill Him with praise; other times, we treat Him as though He is responsible for everything that goes wrong. We love Him, promise Him everything, make covenants we don’t keep, then abandon Him. When life seems to be on the verge of destruction, we return seeking His face. How unfaithful, ungrateful, and dishonest can we be?

Yet every struggle, every heartbreak, every betrayal carries a lesson. Life is not about avoiding pain—it is about learning from it. It teaches patience, humility, and endurance. It reminds us that even when we falter, we are given chances to rise, to grow, to realign ourselves with what truly matters.

So, do not let life dictate your character. Do not let rejection, comparison, or suffering define who you are. Embrace every phase, learn from every wound, and recognize that even in our brokenness, there is purpose. Life may not always be fair, but it is always instructive—and it is always calling us to become more than we are.

  • Gansu’s Intangible Cultural Heritage; Reinventing and Unlocking China’s Cultural Legacy

Gansu’s Intangible Cultural Heritage; Reinventing and Unlocking China’s Cultural Legacy

    By Othuke Evroh

As I stepped into the majestic hall of the Gansu Provincial Museum, one of the repositories of ancient intangible cultural relics and archaeological sites in Lanzhou, the capital and largest city of Gansu Province, in north-western China, a mother lode of ancient wonders unfolded before me. Its stupendous architecture and domineering blend of ancient Chinese motifs and modern sleekness, seemed to rise and drift above the bustling streets of Lanzhou, motioning and gesturing on guests, including the Visiting Young Sinologists to venture into a world or should I say a realm where the ancient Silk Roads and Intangible Cultural Heritage converge with today’s China’s dazzling modernization.

It was a visit of the 25 Young Sinologists from across the globe during the September 2025 Visiting Programme for Young Sinologists hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and co-organized by China Centre of International Cultural Exchange and Tourism Promotion, Lanzhou University and other Institutions, on the theme ”World Cultural Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage in Gansu”.

The Gansu Provincial Museum was our first point of call and as I sauntered through the galleries, in the midst of the other 24 Sinologists and a crush of visitors that flocked this exquisite museum on a daily basis, I could not help but yield to the realization that here is a nation that is reborn and modernized, yet remains deeply rooted in its timeless cultural heritage.

Gansu Province as it were today, is more than just a cultural sanctuary. It transcends that. Gansu Province is the oasis of Intangible Cultural Heritage and by virtue of that, has become a testament to China’s rich cultural history and a shining example of how culture can drive economic growth and prosperity of a country.

Intangible cultural heritage refers to the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills, as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith, that communities, groups, and in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. In Gansu, Intangible cultural heritage as transmitted from generation to generation is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interactions with nature, their history and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity, human creativity and economic development. Sino-China under the leadership of President Xi Jinping recognizes the enormous potential of culture and tourism to boost the nation’s economy and by leveraging its rich intangible cultural heritage, China is positioning itself as a major player in the global tourism industry.

Examples of intangible cultural heritage in Gansu Province include; The Hua’er Folk Song, the Yugur Folk Songs, Chinese Shadow Puppetry, the Lanzhou Taipingg Drum, the Qingyang Paper-Cutting and the Qiqiao Festival in Xihe County, among others.

It is instructive to state that though China officially joined the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) Convention for the Safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage in 2004. China has remained conspicuously involved in its programmes and as such, has 44 items listed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage, the most of any country, as of December, 2024. Thanks to Gansu Province. Currently, Gansu Province has about 778 provincial level intangible cultural heritage representative projects and 83 national level intangible cultural heritage representative projects, including 3 inscribed on UNESCO’s representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. In the same vein, about 735 caves have been preserved in the Mogao cave. However, Only 60 caves are readily open for exhibition to the general public.

According to UNESCO, cultural and historical travel accounts for 40% of all tourism globally, with domestic tourist trips generating over $11 billion in revenue during the 2024 New Year’s holiday. The nexus between culture and tourism cannot be overemphasised. And when rightly harnessed, can become another goldmine. To the People’s Republic of Chinese, intangible cultural heritage is not just low hanging fruits, it is the real future.

Currently, China’s cultural tourism strategy is multifaceted. While the governments at all levels are investing in intangible cultural heritage through the state and public-private partnerships in infrastructural development, promoting cultural events and showcasing its rich heritage by advancing different initiatives, the industry itself is driven by the Chinese populace through the mass participation of the Chinese citizenry in the culture and tourism industry. In addition to this, China has displayed an unreserved commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage sites such as the Maijishan Grottoes, the Mogao Caves, its ancient burial sites including the Wei and Jin mural tombs, the Jiayuguan Pass, the Bingling Temple Grottoes, the Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Spring, which are not only significant intangible cultural treasures but also major tourist attractions.

China is also hosting various cultural events, including festivals and exhibitions to promote its intangible cultural heritage and attract tourists from different parts of the globe just as it is safeguarding its intangible cultural heritage.

In conclusion, as the People’s Republic of China continues to invest in its cultural tourism industry to enable it compete with countries like Spain, France, Japan, Italy, Malaysia and the the United States that have effectively harnessed the economic benefits of culture and tourism, one basic thing that is certain is that culture will continue to play an increasingly indispensable role in driving economic prosperity now and in decades to come. By leveraging its rich intangible cultural heritage, China is positioning itself and creating new opportunities for cultural exchanges and economic growth in the near future. Therefore, it goes without saying that the Chinese modernization is not a rejection of its ancient cultural past, but a triumphant reinvention and celebration of its enduring legacy.

    With Mary Ewa

Life will always remain a venture—an unfolding journey where partnerships are the bridges that connect dreams to reality. It is through meaningful collaboration that trust is nurtured, bonds are strengthened, and the foundation for sustainable relationships—whether in business or in personal life—is laid.

No one travels far by walking alone. While individual effort has its place, the scope of what we can achieve expands when we work together. Partnerships amplify our reach, refine our vision, and propel our mission into tangible outcomes. They remind us that progress is not a solo performance but a symphony of shared purpose and united strength.

Times and seasons will always evolve, each presenting its own demands and opportunities. In this journey of a lifetime, intentional planning and strategic action become essential. It is not enough to dream; we must design. It is not enough to start; we must sustain. And in doing so, the wellbeing of every member within our circle—our team, our partners, our community—must remain at the heart of all that we build.

The mark of a true legacy is not found in fleeting achievements, but in indelible impressions that withstand the test of time. Anyone can make a mark, but not everyone can leave one that transforms generations. To build a reliable and better humanity, we must commit to values that foster peace, empathy, and collective growth.

It requires time and effort—yes. It demands dedication, consultation, and commitment. It calls for sacrifice and perseverance to birth a new dawn—a dawn where trust reigns over doubt, where understanding conquers division, and where unity becomes the language of progress.

If we each become intentional bridge-builders—linking hearts, joining hands, and uplifting others—the vision of a peaceful and thriving society will not just be an aspiration; it will become our shared reality. For in the end, humanity’s greatness is measured not by how high we rise alone, but by how far we go together.
